In my last article, I talked about how getting high quality links from authoritative websites in your field can boost your search engine rankings. This time, we’re going to explore further into linking strategies, and how to determine and obtain “high quality” links. We’re also going to talk briefly about Google’s PageRank.

First, let’s examine a regular link. It’s a piece of text (or image, but we’re going for text) that links to your blog, and some of the factors that matter are

1)     The address which it links to

2)     The text of the link

3)     The PageRank of the page on which the link resides

Let’s analyze this information one by one. First, you’d naturally want the link to link to your blog, but to which page of your blog? To an individual post or to your blog’s home page? Since your blog is a constantly updated website, it is always wise to accumulate all the links to point to your main page instead if individual posts because they tend to be very time-sensitive.

Link building is the most challenging aspect of SEO. Webmasters the world over struggle with this aspect of SEO, and SEO practitioners are constantly re-developing the methods they use to acquire new links from websites. When linkbuilding, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Firstly, not every link is equal in value, Google values a link based on a whole multitude of factors, not just anchor text. Is the link contained on a page that’s relevant to the site being linked to? Where on the page is the link placed? What about the text surrounding the link, is this text contextually relevant to the page on the site being linked to? All of these factors, and many, many more come into play when Google is assessing the relative important or value of a link to your site.

PageRank is an indicator of page importance, but it is just one of many indicators – do not become fixated on this subject. It is worth noting that the PageRank value depicted in your toolbar may not even be the true importance value Google has assigned to a particular page. PageRank is updated in cycles, usually once every three to four months. As such, it is nigh impossible to get a true indication on the PageRank value of a particular page. A page may have decline or increased in “importance” since Google last updated the PageRank value. As such, it’s well worth attempting to acquire links from website’s or pages that you see increasing in importance (these pages are already important in Google’s eyes, even though PageRank values are updated only once every three to four month, Google’s own internal value it assigns to each page (the value that will form the base of future PageRank updates) is constantly updated.

It is also worth noting when looking at pages on which to acquire links that there can be a world of difference in importance between two pages that share a similar or the same PageRank value. The value you see in the toolbar is merely an indicator, Google’s base PageRank value is actually calculated on a scale of about 20 decimal points (the true extent of decimal points that Google bases is calculation on is open to interpretation). This means a page with a page rank value of four could have a true value of 4.7 or 4.8 – whereas another page with a PageRank value of four could have a value of 4.1. While PageRank is a good indicator of the relative importance of a page, it is not the be all and end all.

PageRank is the numerical value that Google assigns to each page on a website and is a measure of the importance or “authority” that Google places on that page.  Google does not disclose exactly how the PageRank value is calculated however it is a number displayed as between 1 and 10 which is boiled down from a much larger number derived from Google’s complex algorithmic analysis of each web page.  And that is important to note: EACH page on a website can be assigned a separate PageRank value, even if it is zero (some pages, especially new pages, may not have a PageRank assigned at all).  PR does contribute to a page’s rankings or placings in the Google search results but while it seems that in general the higher the PageRank for a page then the higher up the Google rankings it goes, this often does not hold true as other factors come into play.

Several factors contribute to PageRank (PR) and a significant one is inbound link quantity/quality, or Link Popularity.  Whenever a website links into your own website, that counts as a “vote” for your website which Google measures and this contributes to your PageRank.  Now, the higher the PageRank held by the page linking to yours, then the more valuable that in-bound link is and the more it will contribute to your own page’s PageRank. So it is more important to grow quality links into your website rather than quantity, but even better is to grow the quantity of good quality links in.  There are a number of ways in which inbound links can be developed:

Best practice methods:
- Request links from business partners, suppliers, customers etc
- Blog marketing
Dubious or low success methods:
- Purchase links
- Article marketing
- Directory submissions

Absolute no-no’s:
- Use of Link Farms

As well as inbound links from websites that are external to your own website counting toward your PageRank, internal links between pages within your own website are important too.  In this way PageRank from high PR pages (often your home page for instance) can be distributed to internal pages on your website, thus increasing their perceived “value”.   

So we can see that Google assesses each page on your website separately: analyses inbound link quality and quantity and analyses internal linkage and then in conjunction with other factors pronounces its judgment on every one of your pages by way of the PageRank value.  Clearly if Google can’t find a page(s) on your website then it (they) won’t be assigned a PageRank at all and so won’t perform well in the search results pages.  This where a website built with Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) in mind is essential for Google success.

The building of PageRank is a slow process driven primarily by the slow process of acquiring quality inbound links. Gradual it must be: if Google sees any dramatic or sudden increases in your Link Popularity it may deem there to be “unnatural” inbound link development and penalise your website by holding back PageRank and keeping you lower in the search results.
